Acura has announced that its new ZDX, which made its debut as a prototype at the New York auto show in April, will arrive at dealerships this winter.
Acura is calling the ZDX a “four-door sports coupe,” even though coupes are by definition two-door vehicles. Be that as it may, the slope-backed ZDX is a bit of a segment-bender, with a coupelike profile but four side doors, a hatchback and seating for five. At one point it looked to be something unique among the Honda-Acura family of vehicles, but recently Honda announced the Crosstour, a vehicle coming this fall with a similar profile.
The ZDX will share quite a bit with the MDX sport utility vehicle, including its platform and powertrain –- a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine mated to an all-new six-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes Acura’s exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.
When it was introduced, the ZDX rustled up more than its share of publicity because it was largely designed by an unheralded young woman, Michelle Christensen, right out of design school.
“We’ve worked on almost nothing else for three years,” Ms. Christensen said at the time. “You have to fight for, and justify, every element.”
Acura said the production ZDX would be “staying true to the prototype,” which featured a panoramic glass roof, hidden rear-door handles and a hand-stitched leather interior. The ZDX will be priced and positioned between the MDX and the RL luxury sedan, Acura said. Pricing and additional details have not been announced.
